Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday was traditionally a chance for people to use up all of the ingredients that were banned during Lent – a Christian festival – by making pancakes.

Fourth Class made pancakes in school today.  This is our recipe:

  1. Sieve 100g of flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl.
  2. Make a well in the flour and salt and crack an egg into this well.
  3. Mix the flour, salt and egg using a wooden spoon.
  4. Add 250ml of milk and whisk.

We also added a tablespoon of sugar to the mixture to make it taste sweeter and a drop of oil to help when frying.

Next we fried the pancakes and added sugar and lemon juice before we ate them!

Why not try our recipe at home!

First Class Go Down Under

First Class did a project all about Australia.  We found out about Australian sports, animals, cities, famous buildings, foods, music, landscapes as well as Aboriginal culture and traditions.

We also made Anzac biscuits which are a traditional Australian biscuits originating from World War 1.  Here is the recipe in case you would like to make them at home:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (150g) plain flour
  • 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
  • 1 cup (85g) Ward McKenzie desiccated coconut
  • 3/4 cup (155g) brown sugar
  • 125g butter
  • 2 tbs golden syrup
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
 Method
  1. Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Sift the flour into a large bowl. Stir in the oats, coconut and brown sugar.
  2. Put the butter, golden syrup and 2 tbs water in a small saucepan. Stir over a medium heat until melted. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda.
  3. Pour the butter mixture into the flour mixture and stir until combined.
  4. Roll level tablespoons of mixture into balls. Place on the trays, about 5cm apart.
  5. Press with a fork to flatten slightly. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Set aside on the trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack so it cools completely.

Here are some photos of us presenting our projects to our parents:

Comenius Logo

This is the first Comenius project we have been involved in that involved the children in the form of a Comenius Council.  The first job of the Comenius Council in each school was to run an in-school competition to design a logo for our project.  The logo should represent the theme of our project (National Dance) as well as recognising the European dimension to the project and the countries involved.

Each Comenius Council then chose two logos and submitted them for judging.  Well done to Chloe Moroney and Olivia Smyth, whose logos were chosen to represent our school:

The eight logos (two from each school) were compiled and once again, the Comenius Councils voted on their three favourite (they were not allowed to vote for the entries from their own school).

Watch this space over the next week to find out which logo was chosen to represent our project.  Will DPETNS be lucky enough to win the vote with one of their entries?

DPETNS have been taking part in Comenius projects since 2005.  Our first project was a school-development project and involved meeting with teachers from different countries around Europe to discuss positive behaviour and special education.  The countries we were networked with included Northern Ireland, The Basque Country, France and Sweden.

The second project began in 2008 and was based on Playground Games.  Again, we met with teachers from all of the countries mentioned above and also from Italy, Belgium and Austria.  Each school chose one traditional playground game and we created a booklet and a DVD on playground games across Europe.

In September 2010, DPETNS took over the coordination of the project.  We are currently working with schools from Northern Ireland, France and The Basque Country on National Dance.

Gingerbread Village

Fourth Class have been very busy making Gingerbread Men, Women and Children!  Look at our delicious results!

First Class see the light

In Science and Geography we have been learning all about the Sun and the fact that it gives us light and heat.  We were very lucky to have a real scientist come into our classroom and show us some very cool pictures of all of the planets – we never knew that the Sun was so much bigger than the Earth.  We also did an experiment to prove how the earth revolves around the sun to create night and day.  Here are some photos of us at work:

We also learned that materials that allow light shine through them are called transparent and those that do not are called opaque.  Our bodies are opaque and make shadows when light shines on them.  We used our class projector to make shadows of our heads and cut them out – see if you can recognise any of us!!!!

Something’s Cooking in First Class

In First Class we were talking all about the Harvest in Autumn.   As it was time to harvest the vegetables and fruit from the school garden, we decided to use all of our fruit and veg to make our own pumpkin soup.

First we melted some butter.  Then we chopped up onions and leeks and softened them in the melted butter.  We added some cold water and stock cubes to make it taste nice.  We chopped up pumpkin, carrots, potatoes and apple and added them all to the pot.  We also added herbs – thyme and parsley also from the school garden.  We brought it to the boil and let it simmer.

Today we ate the soup with nice bread and butter.  It was delicious!!!

Halloween Horrors

We were learning all about Halloween and decided we should make our own masks to scare our Mums and Dads!!!

First we designed and planned out our masks on paper.  Then we painted the first layer of colour.  Then when that had dried, we decorated with paint, designs, matchsticks and feathers.

Have a look at our masks – we think they are cool!
